Meet the DTA Board

QLD Board Representative - David Mas

David is an educator at TAFE Gold Coast, QLD teaching numerous units for qualifications including Cert IV Leisure and Health, Cert IV Allied Health Assistant and Cert III Individual Support.


He has extensive experience working in aged care for NSW Health as the diversional therapy manager responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating person-centred diversional therapy activities for clients with dementia, Huntington’s Disease, psycho-geriatric conditions and spinal-cord injuries and managing a diversional therapy team.

Diversional Therapy Australia’s Gold Sponsor, Skills Training Australia, recently graduated their first group of students in the Certificate IV in Leisure and Health in NSW, under the expert tutelage of Jacqueline Quirke (pictured above), in a move in Mid-2015 to offer all courses outside of Victoria.

As part of STAs Gold Sponsorship commitment to DTA, they have agreed to purchase a DTA Student Affiliate Membership for each student. We are excited to announce that their memberships will likely continue for another year as the students are keen to progress their studies into the Diploma of Leisure and Health, again with Jacki at the helm!

I have had some experience with Art Therapy and have always found it a bit of a mystery as to how it really works or the benefits for the client. Paula was able to unlock much of that mystery. I found during her session that I learnt much more during the practical exercises than by the verbal explanations. I guess that is the beauty of art, in that we learn to communicate and express ourselves very differently.

This session was outstanding. My only complaint - it finished far too soon! Loretta really knows her stuff and presents it in a very professional manner. She comes from a nursing background, so knows firsthand how often Diversional Therapy "skills" and "activities" are overlooked as being frivolous and unimportant. Loretta learned, when studying Music Therapy, how important our profession really is, especially for reaching Dementia specific clients/residents. ABC – Mental As 




To support Mental Health Week 5th – 12th October and to try and reduce the stigma of mental illness the ABC has its own project called Mental As with the underlying logo of talk, give and seek. They are encouraging donations to Mental Health Research, providing mental health contacts such as Lifeline, Black Dog Institute, Headspace, Sane Australia and the Kids help line just to name a few and have a charity auction occurring.

Hello Everyone,

Well the year is certainly flying by. I am looking forward to meeting some of our Group Leaders at the National Conference this coming week. I hope by meeting you in person we will be able to support each other even more in our valuable roles.

There is still so much we can do, as Group Leaders, to raise awareness of DTA in the community. A local Database of email addresses that include all Aged Care Facilities in your area can really help.
