Hello Members,

Every month I write to you about the exciting things that are occurring from a Board and organisational perspective – and this month is certainly no different!

You will have been reading about the focus of the Board this year, to engage with other Diversional Therapists around the world. Sometimes the naming differs, however the underlying similarity is around the role.

I have been overwhelmed, when engaging with other leaders around the world, how we all ‘speak’ the same language, and have the same organisational aspirations and challenges.

This month, Darren Robinson (International Liaison Board member) and I met, via skype, with

Welcome to the 2nd annual DTA special print Collector’s Edition newsletter! In writing this piece, I reflected on changes within Diversional Therapy practice and awareness, and how we can continue to drive the recognition of Diversional Therapy.

Driven by demand, private practice is an emerging DT field. This growth area is exciting and stimulating and it requires the practitioner to comply with specific legislative guidelines. Other strategies are not essential; however support best practice and therefore more likelihood of positive business outcomes. These may be all new concepts if you have not owned or operated a business! DTA understand the move into private practice is a big step. To support members through this process, DTA will develop

Hello Members,

Another busy month from the Board’s perspective, with much happening across a wide range of topics.

DT Week is almost upon us! I urge you to use this time to promote your role and the awareness of the Diversional Therapy profession. The Board work tirelessly to do the same; it is in your very best interests to alert those around you to the benefits within the breadth and depth of your role. Be proud! You are unique in what you do and how you do it!

By the time you read this, the Study Tour to Japan will be in full swing! This has been the culmination of several years of discussions and then planning. Five Board members are represented on this tour, with several speaking at the Symposiums organised by Takako Serizowa, Chairperson, Diversional Therapy Japan. Takako is well known to many of you from her frequent visits to Australia, and her attendance and presentations at DTA conferences. I know she is very excited about the

Hello Members,

I write this newsletter with excitement! Over the past few years, the Board of DTA have made a conscious effort to engage with other like-minded organisations around the world.

Many of you will have seen Takako Serizawa (President, DT Japan) at DTA conferences, along with some of her students, as they have taken advantage of the opportunity to engage with Australian DT trends and experiences. Last conference, we also welcomed two Board members from DT New Zealand, making the Gold Coast conference a truly international affair!

Over the past 18 months, Board member Darren Robinson, has been part of the international liaison portfolio and has worked to building this international forum. Darren, in his quiet and unassuming way, has made contact with Leisure professionals in

Hello Members,

Here we are already looking at March! The year seems to be flying past and from what you tell me, we are all very busy. Your Board have also not wasted any time and are busy in projects, both long and short term.

The study tour of Japan is fully planned and organised. This is an amazing opportunity to develop strong and lasting ties with DT workers in Japan, and also to share and learn another culture. Imagine the extent of resources you could bring back to your own facility after this exchange, not to mention developing close friendships with fellow DT’s.

The International Liaison group have been working

President Report – AGM 17th November 2015

Good Evening everyone, and thank-you for the great attendance,

I’d like to take this opportunity to reflect on the last 12 months and to share with the member base some of the significant highlights.

Last conference the Board made the decision to create an Executive Officer role, specifically designed to support strategic growth and development. As a result of this initiative, new strategic and business plans have been developed, and it is from this basis that the Board works.

As a direct result of this and the development of strong strategic partnerships, there has been an increase in member growth, particularly in the area of

Hello Members, This newsletter comes to you full of amazing, fantastic news and ideas! If the Adelaide conference (2014) was dubbed the friendly conference, then the 2015 Gold Coast conference must surely be the thinking conference! There was so much interaction, engagement, sharing of ideas, concepts, and development of new thoughts, plans, and areas to investigate further! I know I came away exhausted, yet invigorated, with plans, ideas and thoughts for supporting DTA into the future.

Your Board also met the day prior to the conference. This is the only day we meet face to face, as all of our meetings are via phone link-up. I have to say, we worked very, very hard that day, and I have no doubt that each Board member went away exhausted. One of the initiatives DTA have been planning is to develop a suite of on-line educational experiences. You might have already taken advantage of similar tools on the DTA website. The new tools will be part of the Healthstrong education program. DTA have met with

Hello Members,

What a lot has happened since I wrote to you last! I recently attended the New Zealand Society of Diversional Therapists Annual Conference. This was an amazing and uplifting experience, and I have reported further on this within the body of the newsletter. I would encourage all DTA members to expand their networking and expose themselves to alternative ideas by attending opportunities such as this. We were treated to many differing concepts, most of which would transfer to Australia, and were also able to meet up with colleagues from across the Tasman. It’s interesting to appreciate the issues and concerns we face in Australia are similar to what is experienced in New Zealand. DTA and DTNZ are working to making sure that the differences between the two organisations are minimised and that we can share as much information as possible in supporting the DT role across both nations. Mary Gracie, NZ DT President will be attended the Gold Coast conference, so please take the opportunity to chat with her and welcome her to Australia. Please take the time to read the full report within the body of the newsletter; there are some ideas and contacts which you might be able to follow up on!

Keep an eye on the website; there are some fantastic new networking tools about to start in the next few weeks. Forums will be the means by which you can communicate with DT’s working in similar settings, or with a similar client base, or where you can catch up with the latest news and information. This is just another example of how your Association has listened and responded to your needs.

Hello Members,

Brrr! I think the whole nation has been freezing! It seems to have been such a long, cold winter. I hope you are all coping well and the winter bugs and flus haven’t hit you too hard.

As I write to you, I am preparing to attend the New Zealand Diversional Therapy Conference in Auckland. I am really looking forward to catching up with NZ DT’s I met two years ago, and also at the DTA Conferences, and of course, meeting new friends in the DT world. I will give you a full briefing in next month’s newsletter.

And speaking of Conferences… have you taken advantage of the member early bird registration to attend the fantastic, brilliant, inspiring Gold Coast Conference… well, don’t panic if you haven’t, because this
