Hi Members,

I can hardly believe December is upon us and that Christmas is just around the corner. I’m sure all of you are busy getting ready for the holiday season and make sure you are on Santa’s nice list. Summer has also arrived too bringing her warm sunny days. I also send out my prayers to those effected by the QLD bush fires. 

A lot has happened this year that has kept the board busy and working hard. From the Draft Aged Care Standards to the Four Corners report on Age care facilities and the announcement of a Royal Commission into Aged Care. The DRTA Board has been working hard to ensure our members voices are heard and recognised. This is ongoing and we will continue to make sure we continue to be represented in this arena. Conference 2018
This year’s annual DRTA Conference was held in Melbourne at the beautiful Caulfield Racecourse. Melbourne put on wonderful weather and all that could be seen out the windows was beautiful blue skies across the racetrack.
We had a range of speakers and international guests sharing their knowledge with us all. There really was something for everyone.

The last few months have been extremely busy for members of the board with conference but also with many changes to aged and community care with the new accreditation standards coming into effect next year.

The board has been giving feedback to the draft standards and its processes, whilst advocating for better staff to resident ratios, the need for trained staff and having specific leisure roles for the activity and leisure program.

In September at the DRTA National Conference in Melbourne, we once again played host to some of our DRTA International colleagues with possibly the biggest number of International visitors to our annual conference to date.

We had Takako Serizawa, the President of the Diversional Therapy Association of Japan back for her 15th visit to our shores and she again bought along a tour party with her from Japan. We also had once again, the new President of the New Zealand Society of Diversional and Recreation Therapy, Orquidea Mortera attend the conference. Vijay Pillar a DT from Auckland also attended. Vijay has been to our conferences before and it was very special to have her back again.
